Assignment 4 is now on-line. It is just an improvement on assignment 3 by moving the form validation on the client-side using JvaScript, and storing user information in a cookie rather than on the server-side. The due date will be Friday February 16th, 2001 at 16:00.

New deadline - February 7, 2001
Due date for the assignment 3 has been extended. The new deadline to hand-in your assignments is Friday February 9th, 2001 at 16:00.

Access - February 2, 2001
Some people still seem to have problems accessing the diffrent password protected pages and tools on our course web site. As I explained in class, you have to use your unix ID to login and (for the first time) use your student ID as a password. I recommend that you change your passwords as soon as possible. This password is for our course web site. It has nothing to do with your unix or GPU account.

A2 results - February 2, 2001
You can now see the contributions of the sudents for assignment2. Go to the activity page and check under assignment 2.

Chat - February 1, 2001
The U-Chat too has a problem. I'll fix it as soon as I'll find some time. There are access permissions that I'll have to change. Sorry about that.

Your resources - February 1, 2001
The Student Resources page is now functional. You can submit references to pages or sites you think are interesting and relevant to the course. This should be a great way to share URLs.

Topics - January 25, 2001
The topics suggestions for the class presentations are now on-line in the form of slides in pdf format. Check the activities page.

Resources - January 23, 2001
Ajit suggested this very nice resource page (The Web Developer Virtual Library). Check it out. I has very interesting links relevant to the course content.

Resources - January 23, 2001
Ajit provided us with interesting links to UofA design guidlines that could be useful for your assignments:

  • The UofA web guidelines
  • web template page
  • design guidelines

    E-mail - January 22, 2001
We have a class e-mail address that you can use to exchange Cmput 499 related messages. The mail list (cmput499@cs.ualberta.ca) contains all students as well as the instructor and TA.

    UofA Logo - January 19, 2001
Randy Pavelich has provided us with links to some image files containing UofA logos. If you need to used them please just point to them in your HTML code rather then copying them. Thank you Randy.

    UofA Logo - January 19, 2001
In the context of the course assignment 1 and 2, some students may want to use the University logo to give a more realistic view of the simulated department web page. The University of Alberta has a program, university's Visual Identity program, that regulates the use of these registered trademarks and ensure they are only used for appropriate purposes. Therefore, you can use the university logo for other purposes than these assignments and you are not supposed to modify the logos. I have received a communication from Randy Pavelich, the University Web Manager, who insists on these conditions. Here are the rules to follow when using the UofA logos for assignment 1 and 2:
  • Electronic copies of the logos can be made available to your students for this assignment.
  • We will be depending upon your cooperation to ensure students fully understand that the logos are to be used only for this assignment and not to be used in any other way, including on their own personal pages.
  • The logos must be used as provided and cannot be altered or modified in any aspect except size.
  • The old-style 'shield' logos may be rendered in the official U of A green colour:
                hex 10522E. rgb 16 82 46
  • I remind you that another alternative is to link the logo in your page without having to copy the image file. This means that you shouldn't copy the logo and edit it. For example
    <IMG SRC="http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/gif/ua.gif" WIDTH=40 HEIGHT=40> would be rendered as follows:Logo

    Lecture 4 - January 18, 2001
The slides for Lecture 4 (HTML and Beyond) are now on-line. The printable version is also accessible.

    Survey - January 16, 2001
The survey about the students background in web development is now on-line. You can check it in the student workspaces. It is normaly password protected but for the moment since the student list is not on-line yet, the page is open.

    Ugrad network outage - January 16, 2001
On the morning of January 17th (tomorrow) there will be a brief outage of the undergraduate systems planned to complete some software maintenance. Logins and access to home directories will be affected during the outage. All service will be restored before labs start that morning. From the Undergraduate Labs Systems Administrator.

    Links and links - January 16, 2001
Some students are asking about good references for JavaScript. First, we will cover JavaScript in class next week (I believe). Second, I have already put links to resources on the topic in our Web-Links page. There is even an e-book (free) about JavaScript. Check it out.

    Counting the Votes - January 16, 2001
You were asked to vote for your favorite term project. The deadline was today and 12 people (out of 20) used their right to vote. The results are here . So our project will be about designing and implementing a web-based gardening store. Check the project page for more details.

    Labs - January 15, 2001
For the moment we have no lab exercices like other undergrad courses. Therefor, the presence in the labs is not mendatory. During lab time (Mondays 17:00 to 19:50) you have priority to use the machines. Later we will use lab time lab time for the assignment demos. John will be in the lab in the first part of the lab time to answer any questions the students might have. If there are any changes to this plan, you will be advised by e-mail and through the announcements in this page.

    TA - January 15, 2001
John's office hours have changed. It is now scheduled on Tuesdays from 13:00 to 14:00.

    Lecture slides - January 12, 2001
The slides for Lectures 1 (Introduction), 2 (Internet & WWW) and 3 (Protocols) are now on-line.

Topic for the project - January 12, 2001
We were discussing a topic for the term project and I decided to drop the idea for a CD/bookstore, clothes retail, and grocery store. I suggested and on-line gardening store and someone suggested a ticketmaster-like service. Remember that the project has two parts the retail part and the management part. While I prefer the on-line gardening store, you should choose by voting for your favorite topic. I am waiting for the votes (by e-mail) before Tuesday January 16th.

    First assignments - January 11, 2001
Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 are now posted on-line. Check your activities web page for for more details.

    First Class - January 9, 2001
The first class will be January 9th. There is nothing to prepare. Just come and meet the other class mates. We will briefly talk about what we will learn together this term and you will get an idea about the project we will be working on.
