Caelli, T. and Bischof, W. F. (1994). Computational approaches to human pattern recognition. Spatial Vision, 8, 57-76.

Consolidates research completed over the past decade on how humans detect and recognize forms or shapes, and presents an overview of the underlying processes that capture various aspects of observed behavior. Different types of recognition problems are considered and it is shown that a common set of computational procedures appears to underpin the known performance of the human visual system in interpreting images.
