CGI is a program written in any programming language that allows to read from standard IN and write to standard OUT. (usualy Perl or C)

CGI programs read data from standard IN, command line and environment variables, access local files and output either a complete web page or part of a web page.

CGIs are used in/for:

• forms (parse parameters and answer query);
• Server-side includes;
• Server push;
• dynamic web pages;
• etc.
