Tremendous Achievement- March 21, 2000
Our undergraduate team did an amazing job at the ACM World Programming Contest, placing 10th overall. Once again Waterloo (2nd) and Alberta (10th) are the only North American teams in the top ten. See here the results of the international contest. This is a tremendous achievement considering the competition, and their consistent performance over the years. For instance, MIT was 15th and Harvard team was 22nd.

Midterm solution- March 14, 2000
The solution for midterm 2 is on-line. The answers are shown in red. You can access it here.

Note that the second assignment is due on March 31, but this session will NOT be used to answer questions about the assignment.

I will have extra office hours Thusday March 9th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm.

Lab 4- February 25, 2000
Students can pick up their marked lab 4 exercises during ANY scheduled lab period on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Those not picked up by the last scheduled lab on Wednesday can only picked up in the student's own lab section after Wednesday.

It will be very useful for each student to look at the quality feedback on the lab 4 exercise, before submitting the final version of their assignment 1 which is due on Friday.

The solution for midterm 1 is on-line. The answers are shown in red. You can access it here.

Meningitis Vaccination - February 16, 2000
Urgent message from Wendy L. Coffin, Associate Dean of Students, Director, Career and Placement Services (CaPS)
The Dean of the Students and the University Health Centre (UHC) have a critical message that they need your assistance in getting out to our students. Please make this information available to students in any way that you possibly can.

The Public Health Office for the City of Edmonton has declared a public alert due to the number of meningitis occurrences and resulting deaths in the region. There is a program inplace to immunize as many individuals between the ages of 15 - 19 years as soon as possible.

THIS IS TIME CRITICAL. There are over 6,000 STUDENTS on the U of A campus that fall within this age range.

The UHC is taking the responsibility for the on-campus vaccination program. Please help them by getting this information out to the students.

The meningitis vaccine will be provided free to University of Alberta students aged 15 - 19 years on Thursday, February 17th and Friday,February 18th.

Time: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the lobby of the Myer Horowitz Theatre located on the 2nd Floor of the Students' Union Building (SUB).

Students must show their 'One Card' and health care card.

There is a 'Meningitis Hotline @ 1 - 877 - 413 - 7943.

THANK YOU for making this information available to students.

THANK YOU for working with the UHC in keeping our students healthy and safe.

Term Exam1- February 15, 2000
The solution for midterm 1 will be available on-line soon. The grades will be on-line before the reading week. Use the GradeBook and your site access password.

Lab exercises - February 9, 2000
The schedule for the labs and assignments has changes. Please check the online calendar and activity page.

Printout - January 19, 2000
Printed copies of the lecture notes (c114 version) are available at Quality Color on Campus' office in the basement of the Cameron Library (room B08). They have been bundled in two parts. Just ask for the c114 lecture notes, lectures 1-13 or c114 lecture notes, lectures 14-25.
This version can be slightly diffrenet from the slides you see in class, in the sens that we may see more new slides but the same material is covered.

Lab exercises - January 14, 2000
There is some confusion about due dates for lab exercises. Basically, you have one week to do each lab exercise, regardless when is you lab section during the week. So if you lab section is on Friday, you have until your next lab section (Friday) to do your exercise. There are 2 exceptions: Lab exercise 1 that you have to return the same week during your lab section (Week 2), and lab exercise 9 for which you have 2 weeks to solve.

Printing Slides - January 14, 2000
You can now either print the slides 4 slides per page or 6 slides per page. Download the appropriate pdf file for printing.

Textbook - January 12, 2000
I put three copies of the textbook on reserve in the Cameron library. They will be available as of Friday January 14th.

E-mail - January 11, 2000
When you send me an e-mail message regarding the course, please prefix you subject line with "C102:". This will allow me to quickly identify course related messages and help me sort through the large number of e-mail message I receive daily. More importantly it will help me avoid inadvertently delete relevant student messages.

Lecture time - January 10, 2000
I remind you that lecture time is 14:00 to 14:50 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the same classroom VWing112. Today some students arrived up to 25 minutes late. It was tolerated as it was the first lecture and some students may not have known where the venue was. However, it is not acceptable to interrupt the class and disturb your fellow students as well as the lecture in progress. Please show up on time as a courtesy to your classmates and instructor.

Login ID - January 6, 2000
You should show up for your scheduled lab (or any other scheduled C114 lab) during the first week to obtain an NT login id.

First Class - November 18, 1999
The first class will be January 10th. There is nothing to prepare. Just come and meet the other class mates. We will briefly talk about what we will learn together this term and you will get a brief introduction to what a java program is.
