These games represent some of the best Awit played. The 5-round tournament was in New York, October 1983. Awit placed tied for second place with Bebe and a score of 4 points out of 5. Only 3 years later in 1986, Cologne/Koln Germany, Awit struggled to avoid last place in the next World Championship. This outcome shows not only how much progress was made by the competitors, but also how little actual improvement was made in the intervening years. Not only was there little work actually accomplished, but the testing under the new faster Amdahl computer host was not thorough enough. Having to pay not only for computer time, but also devoting personal time was too much. Later, in 2008, when I was trying to restore Awit from its 1986 source code, I first thought that Awit had been sabotaged. In the end I concluded that I was confusing Awit with Abyss (a Chinese Chess program based on T.Belle), that I had worked on in the 1990s.
