Cultural and language barriers are often the main concerns in internationalized teaching and learning.
In order to discover better solutions, our department established an International Student Program
and has successfully completed two pilot studies by hosting international students in the
summer and winter of 2005. We collaborated with Andong National University, S. Korea
because we felt that the culture and language barriers between Canada and Asian countries are most challenging.
Also, we obtained substantial funding for 5 years from the S. Korean government.
The visiting students spent two months in University of Alberta attending classes during the day,
and had the opportunity to integrate with local communities in sports, heritage, and field trips
during the evenings and weekends. Our goal was to expose foreign students to Canadian education and life style,
and at the same time, to provide a good opportunity for local students to discover a foreign culture
and develop global interpersonal skills.
Our longer-term internationalization strategy will be to host two groups of foreign students per year,
and encourage Canadian students to share similar experience in foreign institutions.
