Beowulf
Project started at NASA in 1993 with the goal of:
“Implementing a 1 GFLOPs workstation costing
less than US$50,000 using commercial off-the-shelf
(COTS) hardware and software.”
In 1994 a US$ 40,000 cluster,
with 16 Intel 486s reached the goal.
In 1997 a Beowulf cluster won the
Gordon Bell performance/price Prize.
In June 2001, 28 Beowulfs were in the
Top500 fastest computers in the world.
