c603 Students: A copy of this message, and important messages throughout the semester, can be found at: http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~c603/emails.shtml On Monday, September 24th, you must hand in your test results from the ethics modules. This email includes instructions on how to take these tests and submit the results. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research has developed an on-line course for ethics education. You are required to successfully complete the 5 tests at the end of the course. That is, you MUST answer each question correctly, and achieve a mark of 100% on the course. Don't worry, you can take the tests as many times as necessary. The important point is that you reflect on ethics, and consider ethical decisions in practical contexts. Instructions: The navigation of the web pages that present the ethics modules can be a bit confusing. I have attempted to provide more details than required to help prevent people from getting lost. However, if you do get stuck, please let me know. 1. Go to https://www.ualberta.ca/ELEARNING/login.html to login. If the current date is before September 30th, select "Vista 3 - University of Alberta" as your institution. 2-3. Deleted. 4. Enter your AICT username and password. This is also referred to as your "campus computing ID." This username and password may be different than your computing science username and password. 5. In the "Course List" section, there is a link for "FGSR - GET with the program" with section instructor Dr. Locksley McGann. Follow this link. 6. You can read the "Read Me First" section if you like. Then, click the "GET-ting In" link. 7. Read the introduction to ethics. 8. Click on "Academic Ethics: Five Issues." Click on the first issue, conflict of interest. After you read the introductory material, read the case studies by clicking on the link in the column on the left hand side of the page. 9. Go back to the "GET-ting In" page, select the Test Section, and take the test for this issue. Make sure you click the "save" button before you click the "finished" button. 10. To re-take a test, click on the "house" icon in the top-left corner, on the gray bar, and continue from step 9 in these instruction. Remember that you must achieve 100% correct on each test. 11. Once you have answered all the questions correctly, repeat these instruction for the other four issues. Submission Instructions: 12. When you have completed all the tests successfully, click on the "Assessment" link in the gray bar, at the top right of the page. You will see all the tests you have taken, and the grade for each test. This is a good time to check that all five tests are listed, and that you have answered every question correctly on each test. 13. The assessment web page does not print nicely. Be sure to do a "print preview" before you print to ensure that you'll get the whole page. Also, it seems to help if you print only the frame with the test results, and not the entire page. If you are using the Firefox web browser, you can right-click the page, and select "this frame -> show only this frame" from the context menu. 14. After you print your test results, be sure to write your name and student ID number on the page so we can record that you have completed this assignment. Hand this page no later than the beginning of the lecture on Monday Sept. 24. Cheers, -Mike (With thanks to Steve Curial for the original version of this email)
