From msmit@cs.ualberta.ca Wed Oct 17 16:46:57 2007 Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2007 16:46:57 -0600 (MDT) From: Michael Smit To: c603-announce@ugrad.cs.ualberta.ca Subject: deadlines & review length As you know, reviews are due on October 22nd at 6pm. Author responses will be due on October 26th, at which point you are done with paper 1. Your title and abstract for paper #2 are due on November 12th - basically only 2 weeks later, with the final draft due on November 14th. (You're grad students, so I shouldn't have to tell you this, but I will anyway. It would be advisable to start work on paper 2 in the near future; waiting until you are completely done with the review process for paper 1 will leave you feeling rushed). You should also familiarize yourself with Paper 2's deadlines, as the entire review process is more compressed than it was for paper 1. ---------------- I have received a lot of questions about how long the reviews should be. The answer is "exactly as long as it needs to be". :) It should say something similar to this in the various resources we gave, but to emphasize: We want a review that would be useful and convincing to a program committee. The review should also be useful to the author in providing feedback. In particular, the author will want to know why their paper was accepted, or what would have been necessary to get their paper accepted. By the time I reach the last sentence of your review, I should be convinced that you are right and justified in giving whatever score you gave. If you can do that in 5 sentences, well done. If it takes 5 five paragraphs, no problem. 5 pages is probably excessive. Cheers, -Mike
