Driver, McLeod, and Dienes (1992) reported that search for a conjunction of form and motion was greatly enhanced by manipulations in the target and non-target motion sets. Duncan (1995) hypothesized that this finding could be best explained by perceptual grouping. We tested this hypothesis by replicating the basic Driver et al. paradigm, and moving a random set of dots in phase or counter phase with target and nontarget motion. Perceptual grouping was found to have a dramatic effect on search performance, supporting Duncan (1995). We propose that this interaction between perceptual grouping and visual search is governed by three general rules.
