Pen computing is continuing to become more popular, but is still unfortunately plagued by a number of problems, with device responsiveness, or latency, being in the forefront. Although there have been advances in digitizer technology over the last few years, commercial end-to-end latencies are unfortunately similar to those found with touchscreens, i.e., 65 - 120 milliseconds. This work reports on a prototype stylus-enabled device, the High Performance Stylus System (HPSS) that allows users to experience latencies as low as 1 millisecond while they are inking or dragging objects.
