My Family and My Work

Although my work is very important to me it pails in comparison to my family. My wife Linda and I are most fortunate to have four super children. They are shown in the top left picture that was taken when I received a University of Alberta Alumni Award in September 2007: (l-to-r) Jill, Kim, Greg & Stephen. We also have a terrific son-in-law Kelly who was married to Kim in September 2006. I have attached a separate family page that allows me to brag more family about my family.

I have been a professor for 36 years - 17 years at the University of Saskatchewan and 19 years at the University of Alberta. During that period I taught courses in Introductory Data Structures, Programming Languages, Database Systems, Information Systems Analysis & Design, Compiler Writing, and Software Engineering. My research interests have included topics in database systems and software engineering (see cv page). Together with Prof. J. Paul Tremblay of the University of Saskatchewan, I have written books on data structures and compiler design. Together with Prof. Jim Hoover, I have been involved in the creation of two UofA start-up companies: Avra Software Lab and Onware Systems. I have held several administrative positions including: (at UofS) Head of Dept of Computational Science (1980-85) and (at UofA) Chair of Computing Science (1989-98), Assoc. VP(Research) (2000-03) and Vice-Provost & Assoc. VP(IT) (2004-08).
