Welcome to Imran Pirwani's Webpage

I am a postdoc in the Algorithmics and Theory Group in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta working with Professors Mohammad Salavatipour and Lorna Stewart.  I graduated in Summer 2008 from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa. Title of my Ph.D. thesis is "Scheduling and Embedding Algorithms for Wireless Networks".  This work is done under the supervision of Professor Sriram Pemmaraju.

Research Interests

I am primarily interested in algorithmic research.  My research interests expand to design and analysis of algorithms, approximation algorithms in both sequential and distributed models of computation, graph theory, combinatorial optimization, and computational geometry. The focus of my research these days is algorithmic problems on reasonable graph theoretic models for wireless networks motivated by real problems in such networks. Please see my research page to get a better sense of my work.

Teaching Experience

I was a teaching assistant in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa. During my time as a teacher, I was involved in teaching related duties from freshman level programming course to graduate level course on Automata Theory. My interaction with students has ranged from being a grader of homework and projects to running discussion sessions for three times a week over the course of any semester supplementing regular lectures by the faculty. I have, from time-to-time, also filled in for lectures for faculty.

Other Service

Between Spring 2007 and Spring 2008, I organized the Algorithms Reading Group in the Department of Computer Science. These days, I am a member of the Algorithms Reading Group at the Department of Computing Science. Click here to visit the Algorithms Reading Group webpage.
