UofA at the Rocky Montain Region of the ACM Programming Contest

• 2007-2008
  • 2nd place, team UofA1: Devin Doucette, Kevin Waugh and Steven Soneff lose to UCalgary. There were some irregularities with judging, but still ...

    As our region was organizing the finals, the ICPC management has invited us to the world finals as well as USaskatchewan.

• 2006-2007
  • 2nd place, team UofA1: Zac Friggstad, Steven Soneff, and Kevin Waugh missed the direct flight to the World Finals in Tokyo by 4 minutes. These 4 minutes is probably the shortest and most effective inbugging-avoidance lesson that Kevin will ever get.

    Fortunately for Kevin, courtesy to the organizers, the team managed to catch a late plane to Edo through Narita, pulling Stanford along.

  • Our other team placed 23rd: Justin Bognar, Devin Doucette, Scott Dohei. Sumudu helped to coach them.
• 2005-2006
  • 1st place, team UofA1: Sumudu Fernando, Zac Friggstad, Andrew Neitsch qualified to the World Finals in San Antonio, TX.
  • Our other team placed 3rd: Kevin Waugh, Kevin Loney, Scott Dohei.
• 2004-2005
  • 1st place, team UofA1: Sumudu Fernando, Jason Klaus, Andrew Neitsch and they are going to the World Finals in Shanghai.
  • Our other team placed 6th: Roy de Bruijn, Wesley Maciejewski, Kevin Waugh.
• 2003-2004
  • 4th place, team UofA1: Broderick Arneson, Roy de Bruijn and Jason Klaus ; 6th place, team UofA3: Scott Crosswhite, Johnny Huynh and Jennifer Lam; 7th place, team UofA4: Rui Rebelo, Bill Rosgen and Kevin Waugh; 20th place, team UofA4: Brian Lau, Jeremy Macdonald and Noella Young.
  • We are not going to the finals although I (the coach) was quite sure that we would make it. Everything looked so good up to 3:25 minutes into the contest ;-(
  • Of course we will try next year!
• 2002-2003
  • 1st place, Team: Jason Klaus, Gilbert Lee, Ashley Zinyk and are going to the World Finals in Beverly Hills. They staged some theatrics at the contest by being at a remote position for most of the time. With 10 minutes remaining they were 1st with abysmal time penalty and still ashamed they did not do all the probles.
  • Our other teams placed 10th (Broderick Arneson, Scott Crosswhite, Raj Singh ) and 14th(Patrick Earl, Devon Merrit, Christopher Procter).

• 2001-2002
  • 3rd place, Team: Jonathan Backer, Gilbert Lee, Ashley Zinyk and we are not going to the World Finals this time. We have lost the second place on time penalties by having two 0's where two 1's were due (problem 6). We were really close to winning but ran out of time on problem 5.
  • Our other teams placed 9th (Patrick Earl, Tom Kolacz, Chris Procter) and 27th. (Dustin Booth, Jason Klaus, Brian Lau)
• 2000-2001
  • 1st place, Team: Patrick Earl, Gilbert Lee, Jonathan Backer goes to finals in Vancouver.
  • Our other teams placed 13th (Ashley Zinyk, Inna Shekhtman, Stephen Somogyi) and 15th. (Dave Gomboc, Chris Cumming, Andrew Pearse)
• 1999-2000
  • 1st place, Team: Richard Krueger, Matthew McNaughton, Daniel Robbins (Physics), goes to finals in Orlando.
  • 2nd place, Team: Jonathan Backer, Paul Shelley, Steven Somogyi (Electrical Engineering)
• 1998-1999
  • 3rd place, Team: Adam Beacham, Richard Krueger, Matthew McNaughton
  • There was a lot of irregularities with judging at the Lethbridge site, we placed 3rd although we hoped to win. We appealed and got a wildcard entry to the finals in Eindhoven, Holland, where we did reasonably well tying for the 11th place.
• 1997-98
  • 1st place, Team: Adam Beacham (Math), Howard Cheng, Alan Skelley, goes to finals in Atlanta.
• 1984
  • 1st place, goes to finals in Philadelphia
