A note on Mona's minimax scores:

There is a significant odd-even effect, so odd-ply values are likely
optimistic (at least 50 points too high, so +50 should be interpreted
as an equal position). A score of about +150 usually indicates a
small advantage, and +300 a clear advantage.

In these games, Mona indicates a mate threat with a +2000 bonus, so
a score of +4150 indicates a small positional advantage with a double
threat to connect. Only certain types of mate threats are detected
statically, so there could be more in a given position. Mona reserves
0 (zero) for a draw and +32000 for a win.

Darse: This position is similar to a game Mona played against MIA in
the computer olympiad (Olympiad-8). In that game, White's center pieces
came under fire from all four sides. It is interesting that John was
able to make the position much more congested, and stable.

Darse: After looking at the e6:e3 capture for almost the entire search,
Mona switched to g5:b5 in the last iteration. Although acknowledging
e3-c5 as the main reply, she doesn't really "see" the physical partition
of the left and right sides of the board, which is quite obvious to us
humans. e6:e3 was probably a better practical choice, and might be the
 objectively best move as well.

Then again, what do I know? I stopped second-guessing the program long
ago, out of embarassment, because the moves I preferred often weren't
 even legal. :-)

Darse: The main point of this move is to capture b3:f7 without the
re-capture h5:f7 being possible. Notice that the modest increase in
the score is the first since move 3. John has definitely been holding
 his own in this game.

Darse: c3:f3 is not an error. c2-a2 prevents immediate threats a
bit longer, but the position is now sliding over the edge in any case.

Darse: The mate could have been stretched to 13-ply, but the win
would have been announced this move regardless. This is the longest
that any human opponent has lasted against Mona, which is particularly
impressive with the White pieces, and a somewhat unfavourable opening.
