The event will be starting at 5:00 pm, and you are encouraged to bring your favourite game(s) to play. The following week, on Tuesday, April 21st, we will be having the final Movie Night for this term. The event will be happening in the Heritage Lounge, and will start at 5:00. We will be watching the following movies:
Finally, we'll be having an End-of-Year Beer on Wednesday, April 22nd. We'll be meeting at the RATT (Room At The Top, pub at the top floor of the SUB) at 5:00, and will be gathering to eat, drink, and be merry about the end of another term. The CSGSA will be supplying appetizers (nachos, fries, etc.) but will not be covering drinks. Posted: 2009-04-21 by chodos Games Night We will be having a Games Night on Tuesday, March 23rd, starting at 5:00. The event will be happening in the open area of the 2nd floor, CSC. As always, you are encouraged to bring your own games, and we'll be supplying a few, as well. Posted: 2009-03-23 by chodos March events The CSGSA has a bunch of events coming up in March. First off, we are holding a Coffee Klatch on Tuesday, March 10, from 2-4 pm in the Heritage Lounge, Athabasca Hall. Come on out for some hot drinks, tasty treats, and a chance to take a break and hang out with other Computing Science folk. On Friday, March 13, we will be holding our Pi Day celebration! Since the "real" Pi Day (3/14) falls on a Saturday, our event will be more like "pi - epsilon", where epsilon=0.01. Our Pi Day festivities will be held from 2:00-3:30 in CSC 3-33. As you may have guessed (or secretly hoped :) a major part of the Pi Day event is eating pie! Thus, we urge you -- yes, YOU! -- to bake a pie and bring it to the event. There will be a prize for the best pie, as determined by an expert pie judge (identity to be revealed later). If you are making a pie, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. As well as celebrating (and eating) Pi(e), we will also be judging the outcome of the Beard-Off. Nine contestants will be vying for prizes such as "Biggest Beard", "Most Feral" and "Most Colourful". For more info about the Beard-Off, check out the Beard-Off page: http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~ Finally, we'll be holding CSGSA elections for the upcoming year on March 25th. The elections will be held from 11:30-1:00 in CSC 3-33. If you are interested in running for a position -- or know someone who might be -- check out the CSGSA bylaws (at http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~csgsa/view.php?page=Bylaws) to get a sense of what the job entails, or contact us at csgsa[at]cs.ualberta.ca for more info! Posted: 2009-03-09 by chodos Movie Night The CSGSA will be hosting a movie night on Thursday, February 26, in the Heritage Lounge starting at 5:00. The list of movie choices has now been finalized, so you can now cast your vote for your favourite two movies. The list of movies is as follows: Changeling (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0824747/) Girl, Interrupted (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0172493/) Smoking Aces (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475394/) 28 Days Later (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289043/) You can vote any time between Friday and next Wednesday. Posted: 2009-02-20 by chodos February Events Our first event will be the Beard-Off, which will be happening along with our first Klatch of the month, on Tuesday, February 10th. The snack theme for this klatch is baked goods, so please let us know (by email at csgsa[at]cs.ualberta.ca) if you are are willing and able to provide some tasty goodies for the event. The basic idea of the Beard-Off is that the competitors grow the best beard they can between Valentine's Day (February 14) and Pi Day (March 14), with judging to take place as part of Pi Day events. Since Valentine's Day falls on a weekend this year, we're setting the start time a bit early, to coincide with the klatch. For more information about this event (which has now been updated -- with pictures!), check out http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~ On Thursday, February 12, the CSGSA will be part of a grad student mixer. The event will be held at the Butterdome from 5-8 pm, and will include graduate students from Physical Education and Biology. Come on out for games, snacks, and a chance to hang out with students from other faculties. Finally, we'll be having a movie night on February 26. Send in your suggestions (to csgsa[at]cs.ualberta.ca) for which movies you'd like to see, and the movie options will be posted on the CSGSA website in a couple of weeks for you to vote on. Posted: 2009-02-19 by chodos Movie Night The CSGSA is hosting a movie night on Tuesday, November 25th. It will be held in the Heritage Lounge, and will start at 5:00 pm. In addition to watching a couple of great movies, we'll also be providing popcorn for you to snack on while you watch! We have narrowed down the move choices to the following four options: * Get Smart (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/ * Wall-E (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/ * Christmas Carol (http://www.imdb.com/title/ * Hellboy II (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/ You can vote using the menu on the right-hand menu bar, and we will be watching the top two choices. Posted: 2008-11-23 by chodos November Events We have two CSGSA events happening towards the end of November. First, we'll be having a games night next Wednesday, November 19th. One change this time around is that we are NOT meeting in the Heritage Lounge. Instead, we'll be holding the event in the open area on the 2nd floor of CSC. Second, we will be having a movie night on Tuesday, November 25th. This event WILL be happening in the Heritage Lounge, and will start at 5:00. We'll be watching a couple of movies -- chosen by YOU, the movie-going public -- and will be providing popcorn for your snacking pleasure. Keep checking the website for an updated list of movies to choose from. We will also be providing milk to go along with the cookies. Mmmm... milk and cookies... Please RSVP by Tuesday morning at 10:00 (by emailing csgsa[at]cs.ualberta.ca) so that we know how much milk and how many cookies to get. Posted: 2008-09-15 by chodos CS Department BBQ The CSGSA is hosting a BBQ for the CS department this weekend! The BBQ is open to students, staff, faculty, and their families, spouses, etc. If you're planning on coming, we'd appreciate a quick RSVP (by emailing csgsa[at]cs.ualberta.ca), so that we have a better idea of how many people will be coming. Posted: 2008-07-16 by chodos Welcome to CSGSA's home on the web! Who are we? The Computing Science Graduate Students' Association (CSGSA) promotes social activities and provides a communication channel between graduate students and the department. Graduate students are automatically a part of the CSGSA, and we encourage all of you to get involved. The 2008/2009 executive is Neesha Desai (President), Dave Schnizlein (VP Fun), Nick Boers (Treasurer), and Dave Chodos (Publicity Director). What do we do? The CSGSA holds positions on departmental committees where graduate student concerns can be part of the decision-making process. You can keep us informed about your university experience using the forums so that these decisions better serve our community. Our social events throughout the year include day trips, coffee socials, hockey games, movie nights, game nights, and the annual fall barbeque. We also promote participation in campus-wide sporting events such as intramural soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as the famous campus Turkey Trot (which we have a tradition of winning!). We’ll announce important events on the main page to help you get involved. How do you contact us? The easiest way to contact us is by email. The email address is at the bottom of this web page.
