Finding Your Mac Address FAQ

Information about how to find the MAC address of a computer using different operating systems.





What is a MAC address?

A MAC address is a serial number given to each ethernet adapter. This serial number for physical cards is usually set by the manufacturer. The address is composed of six 2 character fields separated by colons or dashes. Each character is a hexadecimal digit.

If you are submitting your MAC address to get access to the wireless or masqueraded network in the department ensure that you submit the correct address for the form you are using.




How do I determine what my MAC address is under Windows 98/ME?
  • Go Start->Run, winipcfg, OK.
  • This will open a window that will let you select each of the system's ethernet adapter and see their properties.
  • Your MAC address is represented by the Address field.



How do I determine what my MAC address is under Windows 2000/XP
  • Go Start->Run, cmd, OK to open a cmd prompt.
  • Type ipconfig /all
  • Your MAC address is represented by the Physical Address field.



How do I determine what my MAC address is under Linux?
  • Run /sbin/ifconfig -a
  • You MAC address is in the field Ethernet HWaddr.



How do I determine what my MAC address is under OpenBSD?



How do I determine what my MAC address is under Solaris?
  • Run /usr/sbin/ifconfig -a
  • You MAC address is in the field ether.



How do I determine what my MAC address is under Macintosh OS X?
  • Click the apple on the top left of the screen.
  • About this Mac->More Info
  • Your MAC address should be in the built-in network tab.
  • You can also go to System Preferences and click on the network icon.
